Here’s something I’ve been doing to prolong the life of my air conditioner filters. I take out the dirty filter and vacuum it thoroughly.
Next I spray on something like Pledge Dust and Allergen spray or Endust or some other dust spray, to restore the filter’s dust-catching properties.
Then just re-insert the filter and it’s ready to go. Usually I can do this a couple of times before I have to replace it with a new filter. Since the cost of filters has increased in recent years from $2 or $3 to now $12 – $15, this is a good way to cut your cost significantly!

What kind of filters are that much?? Personally, I wouldn’t mess with replacing a filter. My furnace experienced issues this winter because I wasn’t changing it frequently enough. I bought a whole box of filters to last me a year for around $12.
