My family never had any Holiday Traditions when I was growing up. I decided my kid would though. Last year was my son’s first Christmas and we make a special box decorated with my hand print and his hand print on top of mine and then an ornament. Then after he went to sleep I write a special letter to him. I then pack the letters away in his box for when he is older and his ornament goes on the tree.

Then the kids set out the cookies and milk, and we go to their rooms and read The Angel Who Got Her Wings before tucking them in. Once the kids are settled in bed, my husband and I go to the living room and drink hot chocolate and talk about the milestones of the past year.

There are so many traditions in our family from thanksgiving to christmas that it’s hard to pick one…but my favorite is that the only time i get to see my sisters and their families are at christmas but we always do it the week before. Instead of braking the bank and buying gifts for everyone we always draw names for the kids and then for the adults we do almost like a white elephant…have a budget for the gifts and then my mom will rewrap all of them so we dont know if we will get are own gift back….its always fun you never know what you will get and you better like the gift you picked out because last year i got mine back lol.

Mary September 27, 2012 at 2:20 pm

My best holiday tradition – is one my aunt started to make sure the kids knew the meaning of christmas. She put out the manger without anything around it or in it – then each day something new would be added – like the 3 wise men but a long ways away from the manger somewhere in the room. Then shepards and sheep would start coming into the pix – again not close to the manger — and Mary, Joseph would appear on Christmas eve at the manger and the baby Jesus on Christmas morning.

We have an odd holiday tradition that I love.. We have Chinese Take Out on Christmas Eve.
It all started when my Mom and Dad were first married almost 50 years ago. My mom didn’t want to cook anything for dinner on Christmas Eve, and so my Dad suggested that they get Chinese Take-Out since it was one of the few places that were open that evening.
Ever since then, every Christmas Eve, we have Chinese Food.
After dinner everyone gets a fortune cookie, and we all read the fortunes aloud, and add the words “in bed” after it.. I know its strange, but it’s fun!

thanks for the chance and good luck to all.

My Christmas tradition started about 15 years ago when I decided to wear my jammies to Mom & Dad’s on Christmas Day. I always shop for brand new jammies with matching socks or slippers and wear them all day long. Makes for a very comfortable time and my sister’s-in-law and nieces and nephews have started following the tradition as well. May seem silly to some but hey – it is what it is!

Me and my kids always get to open one gift on Christmas Eve. What’s especially fun I’d having them open a gift that is a hint to their big gift from Santa like a bicycle helmet for a bike Santa is bring them and as they get older giving them harder hints. Like mittens to hint towards a paid ski trip.
