We had all heard the news this week, that the cost of milk might rise this year to nearly $8.00 a gallon. If your family loves cereal, to bake, or just a tall glass of milk with dinner, you might be getting quite nervous.
Sadly, one of the most common complaints I hear from coupon queens and kings is that there are very seldom coupons for milk. It sure doesn’t make this price increase possibility any easier to fathom does it? And while I have found milk coupons to be evasive, I have also found other ways to get a great price on milk for our ever growing household! With such an price increase a possibility, it can be easy to skip the dairy aisle and opt for cheaper juice drinks instead. But everyone knows, milk is an important staple in healthy diet. So don’t skip it, and don’t fret about buying your own cow just yet, take a peak at some of these great money saving strategies instead! Don’t forget you can also Use coupons to save on other items in order to leave more money for milk! Make sure to read the coupons using strategies in this article here, AND make sure to read the Seven Strategies to save on milk below!
Here are Seven (7) strategies to save money on milk:
1. Check prices at your local gas station
I have often found that I can purchase gallons of milk cheaper at gas stations (convenience stores) than at the local grocery stores. While food items tend to be higher at gas stations, milk in my area is typically $1 less. It is just as fresh and also cuts out the temptation to purchase other impulse items that you might as if you ran to the grocery store for “just a gallon of milk.”
2. Check the brands and buy generic
At every store there is an expensive brand and a generic brand of milk available and the taste and quality is the same. Be sure you are purchasing the generic store brand for the best price. If does not meet your expectations, most stores offer a 100% refund on their products, so you have nothing to lose by trying.
Throwing away unused milk is an awful waste. If it is nearing expiration and you will not be getting to it, either freeze (if skim) or use up in pudding or other baking recipes. Write the expiration date on each gallon with a black marker if you have to if it helps you remember to use it.
4. Price Match
6. Freeze milk (Yep, it works!)
My store will often run clearance sales on milk when it nears expiration. I use to kick myself because I knew it was a great deal, but also that I would never finish all of it before it went bad. So, with a little research, I learned you CAN freeze milk. PLEASE NOTE this only works with SKIM MILK because otherwise the milk and fat will separate when frozen. When you wish to use simply defrost in the fridge and pour into your favorite recipes. Like powdered milk, it is best in baking and cooking as otherwise the taste may seem altered to you.
Here are a few companies I have sent emails to praising their products and received high value coupons, or have coupons available on their websites. Some are for organic or soy milk products but if you do not typically drink these, like powder milk they are fine for baking!

TIP: When freezing milk, split it up into 1 cup tupperware containers. That way you know exactly how much you’re defrosting. Plus, it defrosts more quickly when in smaller containers.
